The Drop Newcastle is an unusual running and navigation challenge that tests participants' sense of direction, decision making and endurance. Starting from event headquarters at The Cosy Dove in Spital Tongues, entrants are transported to an undisclosed location and challenged to find their own way back without conventional navigation aids.
Participants choose between 6, 10 and 15 mile challenges, with distances measured in a straight line from the event centre. Actual running distances will be longer, depending on the route each participant chooses. Runners are transported wearing blackout blindfolds before being released to navigate independently, without maps, GPS devices or compasses. The 6 mile option is reserved for those unfamiliar with the local area.
Timing begins when participants are released at their drop location, making route selection and navigation central to the challenge. An optional live tracking service is available for safety and spectators, while participants must follow strict rules regarding electronic devices and emergency equipment. The Drop Newcastle provides a distinctive alternative to traditional marked running races.
