Sunderland City 5K forms the opening event of the Sunderland City Runs weekend, organised by Events of the North in partnership with Active Sunderland and Sunderland City Council. The Saturday evening race brings runners into the heart of Sunderland for a shorter distance ahead of Sunday's Half Marathon, 10K and Big 3K.
Starting in the city centre, the 5K follows a flat, traffic free road course incorporating the new Keel Crossing footbridge over the River Wear. The route takes runners through Sunderland's developing riverside area, combining urban landmarks with views across the river. Designed to accommodate both first time participants and experienced runners, the predominantly level course provides opportunities for fast times.
The race is chip timed, with marshals and course signage guiding participants along the closed roads. Finishers receive a medal and goody bag, while secure baggage storage and an event village in Keel Square provide facilities for runners and supporters. The event also includes prizes for leading finishers and veteran age categories.
