South By 5 set to fly

Following hot on the heels of the new Glasgow parkrun at Queen's Park comes details of the launch of a six race series which will take place across some of the south side's best loved parks. South by Five (the races are over the classic 5k distance) is the idea of ultra running enthusiast Alex Osborne.

Alex was an admirer of the sadly-departed South Side 6, the race that took its name from the six Glasgow parks that featured on its 16 mile route. He was also part of the multi-stage Tour of Clydeside organising team and was instrumental in adding a race in Linn Park to this year's Tour programme.

Now Alex, and his partner Michelle Sinsheimer, have created South By Five which gets off to a flying start at King's Park on Sunday 8 December. Two weeks later (22 December) South by Five pops up at Linn Park.

The series resumes in 2020 on 5 January at Rouken Glen Park before a 19 January date at Pollok Park. Bellahouston Park (2 February) is the venue for race 5 before a grand finale on 16 February at Queen's Park, the traditional finishing point for the South Side 6.

Entries opened on 11 November but already nearly all of the 50 6-race series places have been snapped up although entry for individual events is still available.

Race organiser Alex, who originally hails from Preston, told runABC Scotland: "I've run all over the UK and beyond but some of my favourite routes are right here on my doorstep. The six 5K courses that we've created really showcase some of the city's best parks."

Alex added: "Expect a great race day experience too. The organisers and marshals are all keen runners themselves and are certain to provide lots of advice pre-race and encouragement on route. There is interest too in the individual courses – some are on tarmac paths others on trails."

Give A Dog A Bone is the charity partner of the South By Five series.
