Don't leave them hanging – high fives waiting!
Beautiful summer weather and the boundless energy of hundreds of children from schools across East and West Sussex were the hallmarks of a successful conclusion to the Schools Half Marathon Brighton & Hove at Withdean Stadium on Saturday (22 June).
Our lead image shows one determined group of youngsters so engrossed in their battle for the finish line that their supporters were left performing 'air high fives'! The atmosphere was electric as participants put the 1.1 mile finishing touches to their cumulative half marathons under sunshine and clear blue skies.
The children had been working towards this finale over the past few months and there was great support inside the stadium as they set off around the track in their bright yellow Schools Half Marathon T-shirts. Waiting at the finish line were a carton of One Water and well-deserved medal, which the children wore proudly to celebrate their achievement.
Schools Half Marathon is part of Schools Running Movement by UK Run Events, a collaborative revolution for movement and change. The youngsters run the initial 12 miles at school or on their own, earning rewards along the way, and at the final they are treated to a full race experience with numbers, a marshalled route, music, commentary and a finish gantry.
One key partner is award-winning running retailer Up & Running who will be funding filming and promotion for three years and donating 25p from each Bag for Young Lives they sell in their stores. The bags are 100% reusable and recyclable and help reduce waste. Up & Running Social Run Group also helps with volunteer marshals, cheering and tail-running the various Primary School age groups on race day.
Schools Half Marathon race director, Joe Williams said: “It was fantastic to see so many children – along with plenty of parents and teachers – complete the Schools Half Marathon Brighton & Hove at Withdean Stadium. There were smiles all around as the youngsters ran the last 1.1 mile of their challenge together, with a great feeling of community and support. Each and every one of them deserved their big shiny medal! We would like to thank all the teachers, schools, parents and guardians for supporting the pupils on their journey and huge congratulations of course to all the young runners for their achievement!”
