Rowbotham's Round Rotherham is a long established 50 mile trail ultra following an undulating route around Rotherham and the surrounding South Yorkshire countryside. Starting and finishing at Manvers Waterfront Boat Club, the course uses trails, tracks, field paths, towpaths and some surfaced sections as it makes its way around the area.
Runners cover approximately 80K with around 800m of climbing across eight stages. Conditions underfoot vary throughout the route, ranging from firm tracks and paths to woodland and field sections that can become muddy in wet weather. Checkpoints break up the course as participants travel through locations including Treeton, Harthill, Woodsetts, Firbeck, Maltby and Hooton Roberts before returning to Manvers.
The full route can be completed individually or as a relay for teams of two to eight people, with relay changes taking place at checkpoints. Different individual start periods accommodate walkers, joggers and runners according to expected finishing time. First held in 1983 and based on a route devised by Ralph Rowbotham, the event has established a long history within British trail and ultra running.
