The Red Kite Race is a challenging 10K trail race through the rugged landscape of the Derwent Valley in County Durham. Organised by Derwent Valley Trail Runners, the event takes runners away from the roads and onto the trails of a valley renowned for its scenery and the red kites that can often be seen soaring overhead.
With around 256m of ascent, runners can expect plenty of climbing and descending across varied off road terrain. The undulating profile provides a demanding test of strength and trail running ability, while the surrounding woodland and open countryside create a scenic backdrop throughout the race.
First held in 2015, the Red Kite Race has established itself as a distinctive local trail event with the character of the Derwent Valley at its heart. The combination of a compact 10K distance, substantial elevation and rugged terrain makes it an appealing challenge for runners looking for something tougher than a conventional road 10K.
