A Monumental Race
Sign up for a tough trail test this October...
Part of Trail Outlaws' Urban Trails series the Penshaw 10K (6 October) is set on the fantastic trails surrounding Penshaw Monument and the River Wear near Sunderland. With beautiful wooded, riverside trails and a finish on top of the monument itself there is a lot to like about this autumn event.
Starting and finishing at the iconic Penshaw Monument this race has everything you would want in a trail event. Organisers say: "We describe the route as undulating, some that have actually taken part in the race, go as far to say that this course is brutal for a 10K!
"You'll pass through open fields, old railway lines and meander along the banks of the River Wear before climbing back up the finish line at the monument."
If you've got the whole family supporting you then this race also has great facilities for all ages - Herrington Country Park has a children's play area, woodland walks and fun trail walks. There is also a great cafe and an ice cream van on the park.
All finishers receive a bespoke medal and a race memento and there is free parking for the event and free digital photography. In 2023 there were 184 runners taking part, it was Chris Fothergill of Darlington Harriers & AC who won the race in a time of 45:48. The first female over the line was Kathryn Brennan of Washington Running Club who clocked 56:41.
The Trail Outlaws Urban Trail Series events are aimed at giving runners of all abilities the chance to have fun or race on local trails. If you'd like to know more, visit the Penshaw 10K website.
