The Orkney Islands Backyard Ultra is organised by Orkney Athletic and Running Club and takes place at Twatt Farm near Birsay on Orkney Mainland. First held in 2022, the event follows the official Backyard Ultra format and is part of the worldwide Backyard Ultra calendar, attracting runners looking to test their endurance in one of the UK's most northerly endurance events.
The 4.1667 Mile loop follows a mixture of dirt tracks, grass and a short section of tarmac with around 282 feet of climbing per lap. Competitors must complete each loop within one hour before returning to the start to begin the next lap, with the event continuing until only one runner remains able to complete another circuit.
The course is fully marshalled and waymarked, with first aid cover, camping and hot food and drinks available for runners throughout the event. Every competitor receives a unique medal and goody bag, while the final runner standing is awarded the winner's trophy in keeping with the official Backyard Ultra format.
