Omar Ahmed crossing the finish line to win the Cosford Spitfire 10K

Omar Ahmed flies high at Cosford Spitfire 10K

It was a good show by the Birchfield Harriers athlete.

Omar Ahmed won his wings at Sunday’s (29 August) Cosford Spitfire 10K with a win and new course record. He led the way at a well supported race that also saw a new women’s course record.

What better way to name a race than after the famous single-seater, fighter aircraft which played a pivotal role in the Battle of Britain. This was a well organised event by Nice Work with a good turnout of runners happy to be racing again.

The weather was warm and sunny at the RAF Museum Cosford as runners, their families and friends waited outside Hangar 1, ready for takeoff at 10:05am. They streamed away from the inflatable arch to the sounds of Glenn Miller and “Pennsylvania 6-500” along with other songs from the 1940’s.

Runners continued around the museum site, running a loop that took them past several iconic aircraft then onto the airfield and down the runway: around a cone at the bottom then up the runway and back towards the finish outside Hangar 1.

Omar Ahmed looked calm and in control as he flew along the runway, passing people coming in the opposite direction. He was first across the line in 31:43 - taking more than four minutes off the course record - followed by Scott Minshall in 32:50 and Daniel Robinson in 33:25.

Lucie Tait-Harris of Birmingham Running, Athletics & Triathlon (BRAT) was the winning lady in 38:07 – knocking over three minutes off the women’s course record. Victoria Williams was second in 38:44 and Collette Gains third in 39:37.

The complete set of results can be viewed on the RunABC Midlands Race Listings page.

The Virtual Spitfire 10K is taking place between 28 August and 15 September. People can complete the distance in one go or break it down into smaller runs and there is a top quality medal in return. More information about this can be found via the Nice Work website.
