Runners At The Broadway Marathon And Half Marathon

Muddy tough at Broadway Marathon & Half

Muddy and magnificent describes the course at Sunday’s (17 November) Broadway Marathon & Half Marathon. It was one of several highlights at this show stopping event.

There was plenty to challenge runners at the Broadway Marathon & Half Marathon as heavy rain in Worcestershire and Warwickshire caused a sticky situation. Or as the course marker’s report aptly stated “wet, muddy, filthy and muddy”. Shoes with an aggressive tread were needed along with determination and a willingness to go with the flow and enjoy the race.

One of five events from Cotswold Running and another that has gone cupless to reduce their environmental impact it was held in the northern Cotswolds – one of the most beautiful locations within the UK. The marathon followed a figure-of-eight course and the half marathon the top half or a single circular course and both races were held on trails and unpaved tracks with a few sections on roads.

The races started and finished in the village of Broadway and included more scenic villages, woodlands and everyone’s favourite – hills. Well marked throughout with helpful marshals at key points and a medical crew in support. Runners were required to carry the mandatory kit due to the location and changeable weather conditions.

In the marathon, Andrew Siggers of Kenilworth Runners was the winner in 3:25:51; Bethan Gwynn of Spa Striders was the winning female in 4:30:06.

Chris McKeown of Spa Striders won the half marathon in 1:38:32; Laura Leach of Eynsham Roadrunners won the women’s race in 1:55:54.

Homemade flapjacks were a welcome sight after the mud and miles. Many runners vowed to return next year.
