Arran McCloskey Wins Leek 10

McCloskey Tri-umphs at Leek

Triathlon star Arran McCloskey put his multi-discipline training to good use with a win at yesterday's (Sunday’s 19 August) Leek 10. And the hilly terrain suited the women’s winner Tracy Dean.

The Leek 10 was a shorter alternative to the Leek Half Marathon due to an ongoing fire at The Roaches in Staffordshire, resulting in road closures around the affected area as fire crews fought to bring the blaze under control. The organisers took the decision to continue with the event after a meeting with a Fire Service Liaison Officer and other parties, and, with safety at the forefront, devised a new, 10 mile route.

This race enjoys a reputation within the running community as a tough, hilly challenge and the 10 mile version didn’t disappoint. It incorporated most of the original half marathon route, heading towards Meerbrook and almost the Roaches before turning around and heading back towards the finish at Brough Park.

Arran McCloskey of Knutsford Tri Club was first across the line in 57:51. Gareth Cooke of Penistone Footpath Runners was second in 58:12 with Eyob Asmelash of Trentham RC third in 1:02:26.

Elite mountain runner Tracy Dean of City of Stoke AC enjoyed the undulations, winning the women’s race in 1:08:29 and received a gold Staffordshire AAA medal as an additional bonus. Anna Hollingworth of Stone MM was second in 1:10:08 followed by Michelle Buckle of Newcastle (Staffs) AC in 1:11:22.

The last runner finished in 2:1:02.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have asked people to avoid the Roaches until further notice. They will let the public know when the area is safe to visit.
