The Marine Corps Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the United States, taking runners through Arlington and Washington, D.C. on an iconic 26.2 mile road course. Known as The People’s Marathon, the event is organised by the U.S. Marines and passes many of the American capital’s most recognisable landmarks, with an 8K also forming part of the race weekend.
Runners travel from Arlington into Washington, D.C., passing through Georgetown and alongside the Potomac before reaching the National Mall and its famous monuments and memorials. The varied course combines faster stretches with testing climbs, while water points, aid stations and enthusiastic support help runners through the marathon distance.
The race builds towards a memorable finale back in Arlington, with the final uphill stretch leading to the finish beside the Marine Corps War Memorial. Marines and spectators contribute to the distinctive atmosphere throughout the event, while the course and its military connections have helped make the Marine Corps Marathon a celebrated fixture on the international running calendar.
