The Harmeny AC 7R Multi Terrain Half Marathon takes runners through the Pentland Hills Regional Park near Edinburgh, following a challenging route around seven reservoirs. This established winter event combines dramatic hill scenery with rugged conditions, creating a demanding experience for runners comfortable on varied terrain.
The Half Marathon follows a mixture of tarmac, gravel tracks, rocky trails and boggy paths, with steep climbs, descents and possible shallow water crossings. Starting near Threipmuir Reservoir, runners pass through the hills towards Loganlea, Glencorse and Bonaly before returning towards Harlaw. The exposed sections and unpredictable winter weather add to the challenge, making the course best suited to experienced runners.
The event has a small field and a welcoming atmosphere, with marshals stationed along the route and a checkpoint at approximately eight miles. Finishers receive a medal and goody bag, with hot soup and home baking waiting at the finish. The combination of challenging terrain, seven reservoirs and winter hill running makes this a distinctive event in the Scottish running calendar.
