The Buttermere Horseshoe, also known as the Darren Holloway Memorial Race, is organised by Cumberland Fell Runners and takes place from Loweswater Village Hall in the Lake District. Held in memory of Pennine Fell Runner Darren Holloway, the event offers both the original Buttermere Horseshoe and a shorter, but still highly demanding, alternative course. The long course forms part of the Lakeland Classics Trophy.
The routes traverse some of the quietest fells surrounding Buttermere, with the original course covering 35.5K and 2,515 metres of ascent, while the short course covers 20.8K with 1,518 metres of climbing. Once on the high fells there is significant route choice between checkpoints, requiring strong navigation skills and extensive experience of mountain running in all weather conditions.
The event is held under FRA rules with mandatory kit checks before the start and no GPS navigation permitted. Experienced marshals, well managed organisation and post race refreshments provide a fitting conclusion to one of the Lake District's toughest and most respected classic fell races.
