The Cross Fell Race is a challenging 24K fell race based in Garrigill, Cumbria, and organised under Fell Runners Association rules. Starting from the village hall, the event takes runners onto the highest summit in the Pennines, combining demanding mountain terrain with spectacular scenery in the North Pennines National Landscape.
The route follows a lasso shaped course on the Pennine Way, bridleways and high fell tracks, climbing around 680 metres to the summit of Cross Fell before passing the source of the River Tees and returning to Garrigill. Open fell, rough mountain paths and exposed high ground provide a rewarding challenge for experienced fell runners, with extensive views across the Eden Valley, the Lake District and southern Scotland.
The event is fully marshalled and requires competitors to carry mandatory fell running safety equipment in accordance with Fell Runners Association rules. Combining classic mountain terrain, a historic summit and community organisation, the Cross Fell Race has become a distinctive fixture in the northern fell running calendar.
