Babcock's Back
The popular Babcock 10K Series makes it return in spring 2023...
Entries are now open for one of the West of Scotland's most popular springtime event series. The Babcock 10K Series has been on the go for some 35 years now and with that longevity comes the guarantee of a fantastic race experience for anyone taking part.
This year’s series attracted more than 2000 entries and the event chairman, Kevin Johnson, expects an even bigger entry for 2023 as the COVID after effects finally begin to recede.
As ever, the three-race 10K series will consist of events in Helensburgh (Thursday 4 May), Shettleston, Glasgow Green (Sunday 14 May) and Dumbarton (Thursday 25 May).
The series combines elite competition, involving Olympic athletes like past winners Derek Hawkins, Sonia Samuels and Weynay Ghebresilassie at the front end, with club runners chasing a personal best and recreational runners, many of whom may be tackling the distance for the first time.
The Series’ records remain 29:32 at Helensburgh from Weynay Ghebresilassie in 2019, and Fionnuala Ross with 34:08 at Glasgow Green, also from 2019. Both athletes represent Shettleston Harriers. In 2023 there will be bonuses for series and course records, and more than £6,000 in Start Fitness running equipment vouchers for leading individuals, teams and age groups.
The goodies aren't just for those on the podiums though, every finisher at each race will receive a unique commemorative medal, together with a goodie bag containing a different item of merchandise at each event.
Kenny Douglas, Managing Director of Babcock at HMNB Clyde, was delighted with the turnout at this year’s events and the positive impact they had on the workforce, partners and local community. He said: “The Babcock 10K Series encourages our employees, their families, our business partners and the wider community to adopt active and healthy lifestyles, which we are really keen to encourage.
“We are looking forward to continuing our sponsorship of the event in 2023 and hope to encourage even more runners to get involved.”
Runners can enter now for Helensburgh 10K, Shettleston 10K and Dumbarton 10K.
You can also act quickly to benefit from early bird entry to the whole series for £49 (affiliated) and £52 (unaffiliated), this offer runs until 31 December.
