The Andrew Heywood Memorial Windgather Fell Race is a 13.5 mile fell race exploring the Goyt Valley near Buxton, with approximately 760m of climbing and descent across an almost entirely off road course. The route follows tracks and trails through the valley before climbing into the surrounding hills and reaching Shining Tor, the highest point in Cheshire.
Runners face a demanding but accessible fell running challenge, with sustained climbs, varied surfaces and sections that can become muddy in wet conditions. The course is marked at junctions, but competitors remain responsible for navigation and must carry the required Fell Runners Association safety kit. The race is suitable for those relatively new to fell running as well as more experienced competitors.
Water is available at two points along the route, with hot food and drinks provided at the finish. The race has a strong community focus, with proceeds supporting Buxton Rotary and its charitable work. Its combination of substantial climbing, Goyt Valley scenery and traditional fell running elements has established the Windgather Fell Race as a distinctive Peak District challenge.
