The Wellington Monument Race is a challenging running event organised by Taunton Athletic Club, starting in the Devon village of Hemyock. The route climbs through the Blackdown Hills to the historic Wellington Monument before returning towards the village, taking in rural scenery and a mixture of road and off road terrain.
Runners face a steep road ascent towards the monument, followed by approximately one mile of firm stone track across National Trust land. The course then descends steeply towards Hemyock, with around 1,090 feet of elevation change across a distance of just over 10K. The demanding gradients provide a rewarding challenge for runners who enjoy hilly races.
The event features chip timing, a well marshalled route and prizes for leading finishers, age categories and teams. All finishers receive a race memento, with festive refreshments including mince pies and non alcoholic mulled wine. The historic monument and surrounding countryside provide a distinctive setting for this established December race.
