The Turbine Backyard Ultra is a last runner standing endurance event based at West Shields Farm near Satley in County Durham. Following the traditional Backyard Ultra format, competitors complete a 4.1 mile loop every hour, continuing for as long as they can meet the hourly start and remain in the event.
Each loop follows a mixed terrain course across private farmland, single track trails and woodland dirt tracks, with approximately 400ft of elevation gain adding a significant challenge as the laps accumulate. Runners must return to the starting area before the next hourly bell and be ready to begin again, making pacing, recovery and nutrition increasingly important throughout the event.
The challenge continues until only one individual runner remains, with a five person team option also allowing groups to accumulate laps together. A stocked runner food station, drinking water and basic food preparation facilities are available at the start and finish area, while competitors continuing into darkness need a headtorch and suitable equipment for changing conditions.
