The Tom Holmes Gala Chase is a long established trail race held as part of the Oughtibridge Gala celebrations. Named in honour of Tom Holmes, who founded the event after being inspired by his regular walks through the local countryside, the race remains a popular fixture in the Sheffield running calendar.
Starting and finishing in Coronation Park, the approximately 6K route climbs steeply up Station Lane and Jawbone Hill before entering Wharncliffe Woods. Runners then follow compacted woodland trails through the forest before descending back to the village for the finish. Covering around 180 metres of ascent, the course offers a demanding but rewarding challenge in a scenic setting.
Alongside the senior race, a Junior Chase covers just under 3K and follows a shorter route through the woods. Supported by Hillsborough and Rivelin Running Club, the event combines local tradition, community spirit and challenging trail running.
