The Drop Durham is a self navigation running challenge organised by Organic Adventure Ltd, with event headquarters at The Cartologist in Durham city centre.
Runners choose a 6 Mile, 10 Mile or 15 Mile challenge before handing over electronic devices, watches and navigation aids. They then board a bus, wear a blackout blindfold and are transported to an undisclosed drop location. Once released, the objective is simply to find the way back to the event centre without a map, GPS, compass, marked route or outside assistance.
The stated distances are measured as the crow flies from the drop point, so the distance actually covered depends on each runner's route choices and can be considerably longer. With no fixed course, the terrain encountered also varies, making navigation, decision making and endurance fundamental parts of this unusual running adventure.
