The Drop Chester is an unusual navigation challenge built around uncertainty rather than a fixed race route. Participants begin at the event centre in Chester before being transported blindfolded to an undisclosed location. Once released, the challenge is simple: find a way back to the finish on foot without following a marked course or receiving directions.
Runners can choose a 15 mile, 10 mile or 6 mile challenge, with each distance measured as the crow flies from the drop point. The actual distance travelled will therefore be longer and depends entirely on the route each participant chooses. Maps, GPS devices, watches and other navigation aids are restricted, putting route choice, decision making and endurance at the heart of the event.
The 15 mile option is the original and longest challenge, while the 10 mile event follows the same format over a shorter distance. The 6 mile option is reserved for participants without local knowledge, helping preserve the uncertainty that defines The Drop. GPS trackers are carried as part of the event's safety system but cannot be used by runners for navigation, leaving each participant responsible for working out their own route back to Chester.
