The Blaydon Race is a historic road race held annually between Newcastle and Blaydon, following the route immortalised in Geordie Ridley's famous song, The Blaydon Races. Organised by Blaydon Harrier and Athletics Club, the race takes runners along a point to point course and has become one of the North East's best known running events.
First staged in its modern form in 1981, the race was created by Dr James Dewar to follow the journey described in the song. Since then it has grown from a local event into a fixture of the regional running calendar, attracting thousands of runners each year.
Few races in the UK have such strong links to local history and culture. The route connects Newcastle and Blaydon while celebrating a sporting tradition that dates back to the nineteenth century, making the event a distinctive combination of road racing and Tyneside heritage.
