runners at the 2018 City of Stirling 10K

Kris Jones and Fionnuala Ross win Scottish titles at City of Stirling 10K

A 700 field enjoyed favourable conditions at yesterday's City of Stirling 10K - cool, overcast and light breeze - and a flat scenic course - nice views across the river to the Wallace Monument and the Ochils beyond in the early stages and castle vistas in the second half of the race.

Not that runners at the business end of the race would have been sightseeing with Stirling doubling as the Scottish Championship 10K this year. What was a competitive affair saw Kris Jones (Dundee Hawkhill Harriers) and Fionnuala Ross (Shettleston Harriers) claim the men's and women's titles.

Ross followed up her recent success in the Paisley 10K with another victory finishing on 34:07 ahead of Fife AC's Steph Pennycook (34:38) with Jo Williams (Lothian RC) third in 35.43.

Jones who had picked up the top prize at the Great Aberdeen Run Half Marathon a fortnight ago broke the tape on 29:56. Cambuslang Harrier and GB triathlete Grant Sheldon was second in 30.46 with Euan Gillham (Kilbarchan AAC) third - 30.48. That trio were followed home by a posse of top club runners including Alistair Hay and Kenny Wilson.

In fact the event was a real club festival with big contingents from Edinburgh AC, Perth Road Runners, PH Racing Club, Bellahouston Road Runners, Wee County Harriers, Dundee Road Runners, Aberdeen Metro and numerous others. The midpoint finish time was a fast 45:30.

Fife retailer and regular blogger Dave Morton was amused to have been allocated the No.1 number but responded with a 10k PB of 41:21 (chip time). A good omen for his trip to Berlin Marathon on Sunday.
