Sister Act At Staffs XC
Sisters did it for themselves at the Staffordshire AAA Cross Country Championships, Sandwell Valley Park in West Bromwich with Katie and Lucy Holt in winning form at last Saturday’s (6 January) event.
The Holt sisters competed on a very cold, wet day that so often accompanies cross country races. The course was undulating and muddy – it resembled a bog underfoot, making it tough going for the club runners in a keenly contested event with individual and team prizes at stake. Added to this was the honour of being chosen to represent Staffordshire at the Cross Country Inter-Counties Championships in March at Loughborough.
There was a good turnout in spite of the conditions with the first race, the U13 Girls/Boys at 12pm, the U15 Girls/Boys at 12.25pm and the U17 Women/Men at 1.05pm. The U20, Senior and Veteran Women (including Katie and Lucy Holt) started at 1.00pm followed by the last race, the U20, Senior and Veteran Men at 1.45pm.
Katie Holt of City of Stoke AC won the U20, Senior and Veteran Women race in 19:59. Lucy Holt of Notts AC was second in 21:57 closely followed by Amie Williams of Tipton Harriers in 22:02.
City of Stoke AC took the top spot in three other races. In the U13 Boys, Gianni Loska was first home in 10:46. Alex Brecker was the Senior Men’s winner in 30:16 and Jamie Arnold won the Veteran Men in 33:42. They won team gold, junior individual silver, senior individual gold and bronze and veteran individual gold on what was a highly successful day for the club.
