The Montane Summer Spine Race is a 268 mile ultra marathon that follows the entire Pennine Way from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. Widely regarded as one of Britain's toughest endurance races, competitors have 156 hours to complete the route.
The course traverses some of the UK's most iconic upland landscapes, including the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, North Pennines, Hadrian's Wall country, Kielder Forest and the Cheviot Hills. Runners face more than 10,700 metres of ascent while navigating remote trails, exposed moorland, mountain terrain and long sections of rugged Pennine wilderness.
Run continuously day and night in an expedition style format, the Summer Spine demands exceptional physical endurance, navigation skills and mental resilience. The combination of extreme distance, challenging terrain and the full length of the Pennine Way has earned it a reputation as one of the most demanding ultra marathons in the world.
