Close Fought Contest Between Clowes And Seaward At Alsager 5

Matt’s close fought win at Alsager 5

It was a nail biting finish between Matt Clowes and Kevin Seaward at Sunday’s Velo Runner Alsager 5 (3 February). Matt won on the nod at this highly competitive event.

They were part of a strong field who contested the Velo Runner-Envisage Alsager 5, one of the fastest 5 mile events in the UK. First in the North Staffs Road Running Association 2019 programme of races it is a long-established and well-respected affair that attracts a top quality line-up each year. Runners travel from across the country to take part, pushing themselves to the limits for a PB or to see if their early season training is paying off.

Matt began the year with third place at the Winter Speedway 10K, a race where the emphasis was on going hard from the outset. He faced the same at the Alsager 5 with a fast, flat course – similar to the Speedway 10K – that started at 11am from the Leisure Centre.

There was little to choose between Clowes ans his Cardiff AAC teammate Seaward who ran strongly on this PB course and battled all the way round to the finish. Clowes squeaked ahead to win in 24:16 followed by Seaward )also 24:16). Stuart Spencer of Notts AC was third in 24:30.

Rosie Clarke of Epsom & Ewell Harriers showed a clean pair of heels in the women’s race to win in 27:14. Midlands Cross Country champion Kate Holt of City of Stoke AC was second in 27:29 with Elinor Kirk of Swansea Harriers third in 28:31.

There were PBs for many and a sense of satisfaction from seeing the results of their winter training. A good day at the office for Matt and Co!
