The Islay Marathon crosses the Isle of Islay from Bruichladdich to Port Ellen, showcasing the coastline, countryside and communities of the Queen of the Hebrides. The point to point route passes through Bridgend and Bowmore before continuing towards Port Ellen and the island's south coast.

Runners complete the 26.2 mile road marathon via the Low Road before joining the Three Distilleries Path for an out and back section to Ardbeg and returning to the finish in Port Ellen. A six hour cut off applies, while entrants can also tackle the marathon course as a two or four person relay team.

The event is held in memory of marathon runner and Royal Marine Menzies MacAffer, with money raised supporting local charities and groups. Transport options connect Port Ellen and Bowmore with the start, helping runners take on a distinctive island marathon through some of Islay's best known landscapes.
