The High Peak 40 is a long established 40 mile trail ultramarathon starting and finishing in Buxton. The circular route explores the varied landscapes of the Peak District, passing through valleys, open countryside and well known locations including Mam Tor, Cave Dale and the Monsal Trail.
Runners face a demanding day of endurance across a course with significant climbing and a mixture of trails, paths and some road sections. Checkpoints provide support along the way, while the 14 hour time limit gives participants until late evening to complete the full route.
First held in 1986, the High Peak 40 has become an established fixture in the Peak District running calendar. Its combination of distance, elevation and changing scenery provides a rewarding challenge through one of England's best known areas for trail running.
