The AJ Bell Great North 5K takes place on Newcastle and Gateshead’s Quayside and marks the opening of the Great North Run weekend. The event brings a lively Friday evening atmosphere to the banks of the River Tyne, with music, entertainment and support around the course.
The flat road route starts and finishes on Newcastle Quayside and takes runners across the Tyne via the Swing Bridge and Millennium Bridge. Its largely flat profile provides plenty of opportunity for a quick 5K, while the riverside course gives runners views of some of Tyneside’s best known landmarks.
Closed roads, a marked and marshalled course and on course entertainment create a big event experience over an accessible 5K distance. Finishers receive a bespoke medal and finisher pack, with an optional event T-shirt available as part of the Great Run experience.
