The Great Lakes is regarded as one of the toughest and most respected fell races in the Lake District. Covering 21K with 2,130 metres of ascent, the route takes runners deep into the wild western fells on a demanding mountain circuit that rewards experience, fitness and strong navigation skills.

Starting at Stool End Farm in Great Langdale, the course climbs steeply to Bowfell before traversing a high level route across Upper Eskdale. Runners visit a succession of major summits including Esk Pike, Great End, Scafell Pike, Scafell, Slight Side and Pike of Blisco, linking together some of the most dramatic mountain terrain in the National Park.

The route includes exposed ridges, steep descents, trackless sections and remote mountain crossings, making it suitable only for experienced fell runners with proven navigation ability. Widely considered a Lakeland classic, the Great Lakes delivers a true mountain running challenge through some of England's finest high fell scenery.
