The Comrades Marathon is an ultra marathon in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, run between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. First held in 1921, it is recognised as the world's oldest and one of the largest ultramarathons, attracting runners from around the globe.
The event alternates direction each year, with the 2026 edition following the challenging Up Run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. Covering approximately 85.8K, the route is renowned for its relentless climbing and the famous Big Five hills: Cowies Hill, Fields Hill, Botha’s Hill, Inchanga and Polly Shortts.
Combining a demanding road course, rich history and passionate roadside support, the Comrades Marathon has earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious endurance events in world running and is widely known as The Ultimate Human Race.
