Chills And Thrills At Brass Monkey Half

Runners at Sunday’s (14 January) Brass Monkey Half Marathon brushed aside the customary chilly conditions to compete at one of the north’s most popular and loved club races from York Knavesmire Harriers.

The sell-out field (places were snapped up within 40 minutes of going live) was headed by Thames Hare & Hounds’ Jamie Parkinson, while Birtley’s Tracy Millmore took top spot in the female competition.

The event is famed for its warm (despite the January date) and friendly atmosphere and has been a firm favourite on the UK circuit since it was established in 1983. Starting on Bishopthorpe Road, runners travelled through the village on to Acaster Lane and back through Bishopthorpe, via Appleton Roebuck, to a conclusion at York Racecourse.

Parkinson set a PB en route to victory in 1:07:12, with Keswick’s Sam Stead (1:08:29) and Tyne Bridge Harriers’ Tom Charlton (1:09:22) in second and third place respectively.

Birtley’s Millmore, winner in 2017, defended her title in style with a winning time of 1:19:02, around one minute quicker than Jarrow and Hepburn’s Alexandra Sneddon (1:20:01), with Tori Green (1:22:22) rounding off the top trio of female performers.
