Running Santas At Chesterfield Fun Run

Chesterfield Santas get into the groove at Fun Run

There was plenty of ho ho ho yesterday (Sunday 23 December) as over 1,000 Santas ran or walked on behalf of three local charities. They turned Queen’s Park Chesterfield into a sea of red and white...

There was no sign of the white stuff; instead rain put in an appearance but the wet conditions didn’t stop entrants from enjoying a festive fun run. Adults and children wore free Santa suits that were included in the entry fee before choosing between 1500 metres and 5K with both events starting and finishing at the cricket pavilion. Last year’s Fun Run raised over £10,000 for charity and the organisers hoped to beat that at this year’s event.

The morning began with a warm-up as runners limbered up to Slade’s ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ and the mayor joined in with the dance moves. Organised by Cannon Events and sponsored by Unit 1 Martial Arts and Fitness, the Chesterfield Santa Fun Run attracted people from Europe, South Korea and the USA as well as the UK who were keen to do their bit for worthy causes.

Runners started at 9.30am for the 1500m and 10.30am for the 5K, completing one lap around the lake or four laps around the park, both of which were marshalled and traffic-free.

There was a commemorative medal and goody bag for every finisher and the opportunity to dry off in the Sports Centre followed by refreshments at Frederick’s cafe. The funds raised from this event are donated to Ashgate Hospicecare and the Chesterfield Mayor’s Appeal.
