The Bullock Smithy Hike and Ultra 56 is a legendary 56 mile circular trail event starting and finishing in Hazel Grove. Celebrating its 50th edition in 2026, the event challenges hikers and ultra runners to complete one of the UK's longest established endurance events through the Peak District.
The unmarked course follows public footpaths, bridleways and quiet roads, passing checkpoints including Bowstones, Edale, Castleton, Millers Dale, Earl Sterndale and Wildboarclough before returning to Hazel Grove. Participants must navigate the route using maps and a compass, with refreshments provided at checkpoints throughout the day and overnight.
The Bullock Smithy Hike and Ultra 56 is renowned for its self navigation, endurance challenge and welcoming atmosphere. Finishers receive a timed certificate, a full English breakfast and a special 50th anniversary item, making this milestone edition a memorable achievement for experienced ultra runners and hikers.
