First held in 1981, the Buckden Pike Fell Race is a long established fixture in the Yorkshire Dales fell running calendar. Starting from the village of Buckden, the race was originally devised by Peter Jebb and has followed the same challenging route since 1987, when the course was revised to create a tougher and more interesting test.
The race climbs directly onto the surrounding fells before reaching the summit of Buckden Pike, one of the most recognisable peaks in Upper Wharfedale. Runners are rewarded with extensive views across the Yorkshire Dales before tackling the fast descent back towards the finish.
Run as a Category A fell race, the event demands strong hill running ability and mountain awareness. Depending on weather conditions, full body cover may be required, reflecting the exposed nature of the course. Combining steep climbs, classic fell terrain and a rich racing history, the Buckden Pike Fell Race remains a popular challenge for experienced fell runners.
