The Black Mountains Relay is a team mountain running event that crosses approximately 50K of the Black Mountains, combining endurance, navigation and tactical decision making. Teams of between five and ten runners work together to transport a baton across challenging mountain terrain using the event's distinctive Brain & Legs format.
Rather than following fixed relay stages, teams decide their own route between a series of GPS gateways, choosing where to hand over the baton and how often to change runners. The start location and gateway positions are revealed shortly before the event, creating a new navigation and route planning challenge each year while rewarding teamwork as much as running ability.
The course covers mountain trails, open hillsides and remote terrain, with every team developing its own strategy to complete the relay as efficiently as possible. Combining mountain running, navigation and innovative team tactics, the Black Mountains Relay offers a unique endurance challenge unlike any traditional relay event.
