runABC is in the process of upgrading and improving its online service so you might encounter the odd glitch over the next week or so but rest assured we’re working on them and the new site will be a fantastic resource for our running community.

Let Be Kind Virtual Run take the strain

Breaking Strain, the team behind the popular Run The Blades and Edinburgh 24 events, wants its event community and the broader Scottish running public to stay motivated and active in the current difficult circumstances. It also wants to support partners to ensure that that there are events, charities and businesses still operating when the crisis ends.

To achieve those goals, Breaking Strain has created the Be Kind Virtual Run. The event launched on Friday (10 April) and organisers are encouraged by the initial response.

Participants have three distances to choose from: marathon, 50 miles and 100 miles. All events are virtual races and the distance can be built up over the course of 31 days from the date the individual registers (so fits within current government guidance). At the end of the period entrants fill in a form on the Breaking Strain website with their completed mileage.

In lieu of a medal, participants can choose to receive either a bag of coffee or box of tea (from two independent businesses - so they get a bit of assistance at this time) OR the participant can choose to donate the equivalent amount to their chosen charity. If they choose the charity option then 50% of the entry fee (£15) will be donated per entrant.

Organisers highlight the benefits of signing up as keeping you active and motivated during lockdown, supporting two independent businesses and continuing to support the charities that the Breaking Strain race community has helped to the tune of £1.8 million in recent years.

Event entrants are already reporting progress at the Breaking Strain Facebook page.
